Local tips for Mexico City
Altitude warning — take it easy your first day
Mexico City sits at 7,350 feet (2,240m) above sea level. Many visitors feel headaches, fatigue or breathlessness on arrival. Take it easy your first day, drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and heavy food. Most people adjust within 24-48 hours.
Metro and Tren Ligero to Estadio Azteca
From central neighbourhoods take Metro Line 2 to Tasqueña station then Tren Ligero (light rail) to Estadio Azteca station. Reliable, cheap and avoids all traffic. Arrive very early on match days as queues are long. Pink cars on Metro are women-only during rush hours.
Afternoon rain is very common in June and July
Mexico City's rainy season runs June to September. Expect brief but intense afternoon downpours most days. Bring a light rain jacket. Estadio Azteca is an open-air stadium so check weather before matches.
Drink bottled or purified water only
Tap water in Mexico City is not safe to drink for international visitors. Always use bottled or purified water, including for brushing teeth. Most hotels provide purified water. This is important to avoid stomach illness during your trip.
Mexico City is very affordable
Compared to the US and Canadian host cities, Mexico City offers exceptional value. Great meals from $5-15, Metro costs a few pesos, budget hotels from $25 per night. Tip 10-15% at restaurants, always in Mexican pesos. Withdraw pesos from BBVA or Santander ATMs for the best exchange rates.
Fan Festival at Zócalo with 16 city-wide zones
The official FIFA Fan Festival is at Zócalo Square in the heart of the city with 16 additional fan zones across all city boroughs. Massive screens, food, music and cultural events throughout the tournament. Free entry.
Use Uber or DiDi for rideshare
Uber and DiDi are safe and affordable in Mexico City. Avoid hailing random street taxis. Do not rent a car — driving in Mexico City is extremely challenging and parking near the stadium is very limited.
