Local tips for Monterrey
Metrorrey Line 1 to Exposición Station
Take Metrorrey Line 1 to Exposición Station then a 10-minute walk to the stadium. Air-conditioned and very affordable. Use during the day — save rideshare for late nights after matches. Bus routes 214, 223 and TME also stop near the stadium.
Hot and dry — very different to Mexico City
Monterrey is much lower altitude than Mexico City or Guadalajara and significantly hotter in June. Expect highs of 33-38°C with little rain. Hydrate constantly. Estadio BBVA is open-air. The mountain backdrop is stunning but provides no shade.
Mountain views — the most dramatic stadium setting
Estadio BBVA is widely considered one of the most beautiful stadiums in the world with the Sierra Madre mountains as a backdrop. Arrive early to take in the views before kick-off. Photos from inside the stadium are spectacular.
Northern Mexican food is unique here
Monterrey is famous for cabrito (roast goat), carne asada and machaca. Very different to central Mexico food culture. Barrio Antiguo is the best area for restaurants and bars. The craft beer scene here is excellent.
Bottled water only
Drink bottled or purified water only — same rule as across all of Mexico. Buy from OXXO or 7-Eleven convenience stores which are everywhere, much cheaper than hotel or stadium prices.
Fan Festival at Macroplaza
The official FIFA Fan Festival is expected at Macroplaza, one of the world's largest urban plazas adjacent to Barrio Antiguo. Huge capacity for live match broadcasts, food and events. Easy walk from central hotels.
