Local tips for New York / New Jersey
NJ Transit is your best friend
From Penn Station (Manhattan) take NJ Transit to Meadowlands Station, right next to MetLife Stadium. About 40 minutes, costs around $5. On match days trains run every 10-15 minutes. Do not drive — road closures cause 60-90 minute delays.
Fan zones across all five boroughs
Free fan festivals are spread across NYC. Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows runs June 11-27. Rockefeller Center fan village runs July 6-19. Staten Island, Bronx and Brooklyn also have fan zones.
New York is enormous — plan your travel time
Getting from Brooklyn to MetLife can take 1.5 hours. Build in extra time on match days with extra crowds. Download the MTA app for subway maps and the NJ Transit app for train times.
New York is expensive
Budget $80-120 per day for food and transport in Manhattan. Eating in Brooklyn or Queens is significantly cheaper. Tipping 18-20% is expected everywhere.
Hot and humid in summer
New York in June and July is hot and humid. MetLife is an open-air stadium so come prepared with water, sunscreen and light clothing. Bring a portable charger as your phone will drain quickly with maps and apps.
Fan Festival at Liberty State Park
The official FIFA Fan Festival is at Liberty State Park in Jersey City with sweeping views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Free entry, live match broadcasts on big screens throughout the tournament.
